O Parvardigar! The Preserver and
Protector of All,
You are without beginning and without end.
Non-dual, beyond comparison,
and none can measure You.
You are without color, without expression,
without form and without attributes.
You are unlimited and unfathomable;
beyond imagination and conception;
eternal and imperishable.
You are indivisible;
and none can see you but with eyes divine.
You always were, You always are,
and You always will be.
You are everywhere, You are in everything, and
You are also beyond everywhere and beyond everything.
You are in the firmament and in the depths,
You are manifest and unmanifest;
on all planes and beyond all planes.
You are in the three worlds,
and also beyond the three worlds.
You are imperceptible and independent.
You are the Creator, the Lord of Lords,
the Knower of all minds and hearts.
You are Omnipotent and Omnipresent.
You are Knowledge Infinite, Power Infinite and Bliss Infinite.
You are the Ocean of Knowledge,
All-knowing, Infinitely-knowing;
the Knower of the past, the present and the future;
and You are Knowledge itself.
You are all-merciful and eternally benevolent.
You are the Soul of souls, the One with infinite attributes.
You are the Trinity of Truth, Knowledge and Bliss;
You are the Source of Truth, the Ocean of Love.
You are the Ancient One, the Highest of the High.
You are Prabhu and Parameshwar;
You are the Beyond God and the Beyond-Beyond God also;
You are Parabrahma; Paramatma; Allah; Elahi; Yezdan;
Ahuramazda, God Almighty, and God the Beloved.
You are named Ezad, the Only One Worthy of Worship.

I think the trend on the internet has moved from collectivism to individualism. Thus, from discussion boards to weblogs (and social networking with you as the middle point). So now you tend to be more connected with people who agree with you or resemble you, instead of being engaged with all sorts of people with different backgrounds and views who are members of your online community. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I really do miss the old days, when people took the time to share their thoughts with each other here. Sometimes the confrontations were a bit rough, but it was an enrichment nevertheless.

Although Baba's body never showed any sign of deterioration, the mandali decided that on the seventh day the crypt should be closed. The atmosphere of grief had become so suffocating that we could no longer postpone the inevitable moment of Baba's interment. It was 7th February, the date of Baba's birthday that year according to the Zoroastrian calendar.
As His precious body was covered, it seemed as if the very essence which had
sustained our lives was being ripped away from us. We cried silently, knowing
Baba wanted us to accept what had happened. Beloved Baba was our heart and soul,
our only light, and we all felt lost but, like machines, we continued with
whatever tasks needed to be done. Even though He had dropped His physical body,
Baba was still asking for our complete resignation, expecting us to surrender to
His wish, even at this time of helplessness and hopelessness. We were orphans
now, yet in all our anguish Baba's gentle, loving hands were ever on us.
Later we heard stories from Baba lovers around the world of unusual events
occurring at the time Baba dropped His body, but the most amazing was the
account we read in the papers of the heavy rainfall in Mecca, ordinarily a
desert. Muslims on pilgrimage were unable to approach the flooded Kaaba for
seven days, 1st February until 7th February, the exact time that Beloved Baba's
body was lying in state.
In His compassion Baba arranged everything in a way that helped us to carry on,
however slowly. After He dropped His body, telegrammes and phone calls kept
coming in from the groups that Baba had contacted, everyone wanting to know
whether the plans that He had made for the darshan in Poona would be carried
out. We began to remember and discuss the various comments Baba had made prior
to 31st January.
When, because of His health, the mandali had wanted Baba to cancel the darshan,
He had said, "The darshan programme must take place. It should not be
cancelled." He then asked, "Is it all right if I give darshan lying down?" He
had also said, "In March we will march to Poona." Putting all these statements
together was like doing a puzzle, all of us having different parts which fit
together to make a whole picture. By the end of February it was clear to us that
the darshan Baba had scheduled for April to June, 1969, should be held despite
His physical absence.
During this time I had a dream from which I awoke overcome with emotion. In the
dream I was standing in a doorway watching Baba and Mehera. She was coming down
a staircase, walking toward Baba, who entered through another door. He extended
His hands, saying, "Come, Mehera, and we will do the prayers."
Because Baba was no longer in the body, Mehera hesitated, as if wondering how
she could touch Him. Baba extended His hands toward hers until their fingertips
were touching, and her whole countenance suddenly changed. I could see Baba
pouring a transparent liquid from His hands into Mehera's. From the expression
on her face it was clear that her whole being was undergoing a transformation,
that something mystical was taking place.

change.gov
written by my bro Nader Ghaffari
Last night I listened in on a panel and was reminded again of the super use of
Internet and social network technologies by the Obama team.
The New York Times reported that Obama met with Marc Andreesen at the San
Francisco airport in February of 2007 to discuss how the Internet and social
networks can be leveraged to communicate his message. It was the beginning of a
well orchestrated campaign that leveraged these tools to not only communicate a
message, but to build a brand, and to empower people to be part of the change
they wanted to see. There was not a day that I did not refresh my Facebook feeds
without seeing friends joining Obama groups or attending Obama events or
communicating Obama messages in their status updates. It allowed us all to be
part of the experience versus just voters. We felt a connection with the brand
and we took a sense of ownership during the campaign. We adopted the message and
not only became supporters but became evangelists by enlisting our friends to
join in on Obama groups or to distribute/attend events or to communicate
messages to their friends via their status updates. The result is now obvious
and nearly two years after Obama's meeting with Andreesen, we are set to swear
in a movement that we hope will indeed finally demonstrate a government of the
people and for the people.
If the trends of the campaign continue, there is no doubt that the Obama
administration will continue to leverage the power of the Internet to allow all
residents to be a part of government on a daily basis. The launch of Change.gov,
in addition to the current presence across social networks gives the
administration a two-way communication with the American people (make that the
world). If you visit Change.gov, you will notice something called the Citizen's
Briefing Book. This is where people can stop in and share ideas with the Obama
team and then it is opened up to the masses to vote the idea up or down (+1 or
-1), very much like Digg. The ideas receiving the most votes will bubble up to
the top and come to the attention of the administration. Interestingly, I just
visited Change.gov and noticed that the idea with the most votes is Ending the
Marijuana Prohibition with 72,310 votes. Hem, I wonder how the administration
will respond to that one. While the discussion of ending marijuana prohibition
might be political suicide in most cases, if truly over time the wisdom of the
crowds points towards this as an issue that is important to a majority of
Americans, the administration will have to have an answer in some capacity.
We are moving into an era where all our voices can be heard in government, and
on January 20th when Obama is sworn into office, it is all of us who joined in
on Obama groups, advertised Obama events, or wrote about Obama on our status
updates that are also getting sworn in. For it is us through the power of the
Internet that made this happen, and it will be us through the power of the
Internet that will continue to participate in the administration. I Hope.

written by Nader Ghaffari
Over the weekend, my good friend Marc and I brainstormed an idea for the Obama
team, and Marc submitted it to the Citizen's Briefing Book. Perhaps it will get
some attention, and Marc will be called into action to lead it :)
Details:
Startup America: Bringing Innovation Back to America (A Government VC Fund)
I have been watching the government bailout with intrigue for several months,
wondering why America is investing billions in industries mired in uncertainty,
merely prolonging the inevitable. Therefore, I propose Startup America, an
initiative for the government to invest $1B in venture capital financing to
startup companies in a variety of different industries, with up to $1M per
company. The fund would work in much the same way a typical seed stage
investment company works, whereby there would be a board to review each idea on
a variety of metrics, and upon submitting a term sheet, the government would
receive equity for their investment. This would allow the government to recoup
their investment and potentially more while providing a great financial resource
for our citizens.
Startup America would ensure that innovatiion remains America's strongest asset.
It would create jobs and industries for thousands, if not millions of people. It
would certainly jumpstart the economy. It would create tremendous value for
depressed areas all across the nation, providing people with resources to turn
their dreams into reality. It could be the first step in solving our energy
crisis, curing cancer, improving education, eradicating homelessness and
malnutrition, improving foreign policy, increasing security, and vastly
improving current technologies . The possibilities are endless. Our minds are
our only limitation.

President-Elect of the United States of America
Washington, DC
November 5th, 2008
Dear Mr. President-elect,
It is with a great pleasure that I offer you my heartfelt congratulations on
your historic election victory.
This is indeed a proud moment not just for America, but for millions of others
around the globe who have come to believe in and aspire for the kind of values
that have become universally acknowledged as the hallmarks of American society.
Your success is a remarkable reminder of the potential for promoting major
change through the ballot box in a free and fair electoral process.
Mr. President-Elect,
The prospect for change as promised by you has already aroused a great deal of
expectation from people everywhere who are hopeful of emulating your example by
constructing societies based on peace, freedom, justice and opportunity.
No where is the desire for such change greater than in my homeland, Iran.
The people of Iran are perhaps amongst the most eager aspirants for the kind of
values that have become synonymous with your success in the recent months.
Iranians believe ‘that if allowed the opportunity, yes they will’.
It is their hope that with your moral and vocal support, they too can pursue
their struggle for the realization of their individual liberties and fundamental
freedoms along with the restoration of their pride and dignity as human beings.
Wishing you ever increasing success in all your future endeavors,
Yours sincerely,
Reza Pahlavi

Shah flees Iran
Faced with an army mutiny and violent demonstrations against his rule, Mohammad
Reza Shah Pahlavi, the leader of Iran since 1941, is forced to flee the country.
Fourteen days later, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the spiritual leader of
the Islamic revolution, returned after 15 years of exile and took control of
Iran.
In 1941, British and Soviet troops occupied Iran, and the first Pahlavi shah,
who they regarded with suspicion, was forced to abdicate in favor of his son,
Mohammad Reza. The new shah promised to act as a constitutional monarch but
often meddled in the elected government's affairs. After a Communist plot
against him was thwarted in 1949, he took on even more powers. However, in the
early 1950s, the shah was eclipsed by Mohammad Mosaddeq, a zealous Iranian
nationalist who convinced the Parliament to nationalize Britain's extensive oil
interests in Iran. Mohammad Reza, who maintained close relations with Britain
and the United States, opposed the decision. Nevertheless, he was forced in 1951
to appoint Mosaddeq premier, and two years of tension followed.
In August 1953, Mohammad Reza attempted to dismiss Mosaddeq, but the premier's
popular support was so great that the shah himself was forced out of Iran. A few
days later, British and U.S. intelligence agents orchestrated a stunning coup
d'etat against Mosaddeq, and the shah returned to take power as the sole leader
of Iran. He repealed Mosaddeq's legislation and became a close Cold War ally of
the United States in the Middle East.
In 1963, the shah launched his "White Revolution," a broad government program
that included land reform, infrastructure development, voting rights for women,
and the reduction of illiteracy. Although these programs were applauded by many
in Iran, Islamic leaders were critical of what they saw as the westernization of
Iran. Ruhollah Khomeini, a Shiite cleric, was particularly vocal in his
criticism and called for the overthrow of the shah and the establishment of an
Islamic state. In 1964, Khomeini was exiled and settled across the border in
Iraq, where he sent radio messages to incite his supporters.
The shah saw himself foremost as a Persian king and in 1971 held an extravagant
celebration of the 2,500th anniversary of the pre-Islamic Persian monarchy. In
1976, he formally replaced the Islamic calendar with a Persian calendar.
Religious discontent grew, and the shah became more repressive, using his brutal
secret police force to suppress opposition. This alienated students and
intellectuals in Iran, and support for Khomeini grew. Discontent was also
rampant in the poor and middle classes, who felt that the economic developments
of the White Revolution had only benefited the ruling elite. In 1978, anti-shah
demonstrations broke out in Iran's major cities.
On September 8, 1978, the shah's security force fired on a large group of
demonstrators, killing hundreds and wounding thousands. Two months later,
thousands took to the streets of Tehran, rioting and destroying symbols of
westernization, such as banks and liquor stores. Khomeini called for the shah's
immediate overthrow, and on December 11 a group of soldiers mutinied and
attacked the shah's security officers. With that, his regime collapsed and the
shah fled.
The shah traveled to several countries before entering the United States in
October 1979 for medical treatment of his cancer. In Tehran, Islamic militants
responded on November 4 by storming the U.S. embassy and taking the staff
hostage. With the approval of Khomeini, the militants demanded the return of the
shah to Iran to stand trial for his crimes. The United States refused to
negotiate, and 52 American hostages were held for 444 days. Mohammad Reza Shah
Pahlavi died in Egypt in July 1980.

Islamic Revolution of Iran
Introduction; Rule of the Shah and Rise of Khomeini; The Revolution;
Institutionalizing the Revolution
I
Introduction
Islamic Revolution of Iran, widespread uprising in 1978 and 1979 in which
Islamic fundamentalists and their supporters overthrew Muhammad Reza Shah
Pahlavi of Iran. The revolutionaries, led by an exiled religious leader, the
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, dismantled the shah’s secular (nonreligious)
monarchy and established the Islamic Republic of Iran. The new republic rejected
Western influences and was guided by Shia Islamic teachings (see Shia Islam).
II
Rule of the Shah and Rise of Khomeini
In 1963 the shah began a series of social, economic, and political reforms known
as the White Revolution. The revolution gave more freedom to women and increased
secular education at the expense of religious education. These and other changes
questioned the dominant role of Iran’s religious leaders, most of whom feared
losing power and moral authority under the White Revolution. Throughout the
1970s the shah continued to anger traditional Shia Muslims, who formed a large
proportion of the population. For example, the shah held festivals in 1971 to
celebrate the 2500th anniversary of the pre-Islamic Persian Empire; this was
perceived as a direct rebuke to the millions of Iranians who viewed the coming
of Islam in the 7th century as the founding date of modern Iran.
Other sectors of the population were also becoming disenchanted with the shah.
Students and intellectuals were frustrated by his autocratic rule and by the
corruption of the royal family, who had become wealthy from their five decades
in power. Many of these dissidents favored some form of democracy as well as a
more equitable distribution of the country’s income. Members of the traditional
middle class, or bazaaris, were angry as well, because they had received little
benefit from either the White Revolution’s development schemes or from the
country’s rapid, oil-fed growth in the 1970s. Most of the earnings had instead
gone to larger companies, especially to ones with international ties or
connections to the shah’s family. Both bazaaris and fundamentalist Muslims
disapproved of Iran’s growing ties with the West.
All of these factors contributed to the rise of Ruhollah Khomeini, who in the
early 1960s was a relatively unknown Islamic ayatollah, or holy man. Khomeini
had several assets that other leaders lacked. First, he was seemingly fearless:
In 1963 he was the only cleric to openly attack the shah’s White Revolution.
Second, he spoke the language of the people, condemning the shah’s “injustices”
in the name of the “downtrodden” masses. Third, and most importantly, Khomeini
was able to transform Shia Islam into a mass ideology that appealed to many
groups. In the past, Shia leaders had argued that although Shia Muslims were a
righteous minority who suffered under cruel leaders, it was not their role to
overthrow the ruling regime and create an Islamic state. Instead, Shia clerics
should defend the religion and await the return of the 12th imam, the messianic
figure of Shiism whose presence was needed for the establishment of an Islamic
state. Khomeini, however, rejected this passive approach. He argued that by
overthrowing the shah, Iranians would hasten the return of the 12th imam.
Indeed, Khomeini did not discourage Iranians from thinking of him as the
messianic imam. Khomeini spread his alluring mixture of revolutionary ideology
and messianic revivalism by mobilizing a vast network of loyal disciples. He was
also able to galvanize the support of the bazaari middle class, which had close
links to the ulema, Iran’s religious leaders.
In 1964 the shah exiled Khomeini from Iran. Khomeini eventually settled in the
Iraqi holy city of An Najaf, from which he broadcast his messages to his Iranian
followers. In 1978 the Iraqi government, fearful that the ayatollah’s powerful
message would create similar disturbances in Iraq, expelled Khomeini. He then
went to France, from which he sent audio tapes of his revolutionary message to
Iran.
III
The Revolution
In 1978 opponents of the shah had several bloody encounters with his security
troops. The most notorious of these clashes was on September 8, when soldiers
fired on 20,000 demonstrators in Tehrān. Several hundred people were killed and
thousands more were wounded in what became known as Black Friday. Two months
later, young people took to the streets of Tehrān, burning shops, banks, liquor
stores, and other symbols of Western “corruption.” Tensions escalated in
December with the coming of Muharram, the sacred month marking the martyrdom of
Husayn, an early Shia leader. Emboldened by the strength of the opposition,
Khomeini called on Iranians to “begin the month of epic heroism ... the month in
which the leader of the Muslims taught us to struggle against all tyrants.” On
December 10 and 11, the two holiest days of the Shia calendar, a group of
soldiers rebelled and attacked the officer’s mess of the shah’s Imperial Guard.
With that, his regime collapsed, and the shah fled Iran in January 1979. He died
two years later in Cairo, Egypt.
Khomeini returned to Iran on February 1, 1979, and began to establish control
over the government. He forced the shah’s prime minister out of office and
appointed a new prime minister, Mehdi Bazargan. Bazargan was known as a liberal
who favored democracy, so many observers believed the new government would
represent a wide range of opinion. In a late March referendum Iranians voted on
a new form of government, and in April, with overwhelming public approval,
Khomeini declared the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In November 1979, after the shah had been allowed entry to the United States for
medical care, hundreds of Iranians overran the U.S. embassy in Tehrān and took
the staff hostage. Khomeini refused to release them until the United States
apologized for its support of the shah and met other demands. (The hostages were
eventually released in January 1981 after Ronald Reagan replaced Jimmy Carter as
president). Khomeini used the fervor of the hostage taking to mobilize radical
Islamic students against Bazargan. After Bazargan resigned, Khomeini held a
December referendum in which more than 99 percent of voters supported a new
constitution. Khomeini became faqih, or ultimate leader, and used his unlimited
powers to eliminate opponents. First he attacked liberals and leftists,
including President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr, who fled Iran in February 1981; later,
he repressed his clerical opponents. By 1981 some 1600 people had been executed
under Khomeini.
Khomeini filled key positions in the government with his closest clerical
allies. He also conducted a purge of all “un-Islamic” elements from
universities, newspapers, and other cultural institutions. In time, many
Iranians—particularly less religious Iranians—found themselves living under a
politically and culturally repressive regime. However, the creation of a
clerical regime also led to vexing problems and ideological conflicts that
embarrassed Khomeini and his allies. Conservative clerics in the Council of
Guardians—the group created to ensure adherence to Islamic code and the
constitution—vetoed reform legislation proposed by the less conservative Majlis
(parliament). The reformers wanted to nationalize some industries and to change
the way land was distributed; the conservative clerics, who controlled much of
the land, were opposed to such reforms. The clerics also wanted to pursue a
stricter religious policy than did their opponents. The result of this stalemate
was that domestic policy was largely paralyzed.
In September 1980, Iraq invaded Iran. The ensuing conflict temporarily
distracted attention from Iran’s internal strife. The invasion, caused in part
by Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s desire to end the propaganda directed at his
secular regime, touched off a vicious eight-year border war (see Iran-Iraq War).
Using waves of child “martyrs” who crossed the battle line, Iran turned the tide
of the war against Iraq in the spring of 1982. Emboldened, Khomeini proclaimed
his determination to spread his revolution throughout the region. But Arab
governments were equally resolved to contain Iran, and with the support of the
United States they backed Iraq’s efforts to stop Iran.
IV
Institutionalizing the Revolution
As the human and financial costs of the war mounted, pressure grew in Iran to
break the enduring and paralyzing standoff between conservatives and reformers
over domestic policy. Initially Khomeini tried to avoid intervening in the
conflict—even when it prevented the passage of vital social legislation—but he
eventually intervened on behalf of the reformers in the Majlis. He did so in
part because he wanted to give the Majlis and other institutions more authority.
He was also encouraged to intervene by the speaker of the Majlis, Ali Akbar
Hashemi Rafsanjani, who wanted to end the war with Iraq and begin economic
reconstruction. Pressed by Rafsanjani and his allies, Khomeini created an
extra-constitutional body called the Expediency Council, which was given the
power to override vetoes by the Council of Guardians. Khomeini then supported
the drafting of a new constitution, which was passed after his death in June
1989.
Many Iranians hoped the new constitution would give them greater social
freedoms. Rafsanjani, who was elected president in 1989, encouraged these hopes.
But while the constitution partly diminished the religious authority of the wali
faqih and placed clerics on an equal footing with politicians, it reinforced the
government’s powers to impose its decisions on society. Thus the revolution had
become institutionalized, but at the cost of much of its popular support.

On January 16, 1979, the Shah and the Empress
left Iran for an exile which was thought to be only temporary. At a
strike-ridden and empty airport, in presence of only a restricted group of
loyalists and Prime Minister Bakhtiar, the sovereigns left by plane for Assouan
in Egypt. The Shah could hardly keep his tears. The Queen had taken
tranquilizers to hide her deep sadness. President Sadat and his family welcomed
them with profound friendship. It was the beginning a painful and long wandering
which would take them in succession to Morocco, the Bahamas, Mexico, the United
States, then Panama and finally Cairo.
On February 11, 1979, Khomeyni took power and a death warrant against the Shah
and his entourage was iussued. It was a condemnation which extended to all those
who would give them hospitality or help them. The Shah and the Shahbanou were
obliged to leave the country without a definite destination for no land of haven
had been suggested. Upon the intervention of the United States, the Bahamas
Islands accepted to grant them asylum for only three months, on the condition
that the Shah would refrain from taking any action or make any declaration. They
went later on to Mexico, where the health of the Shah who had cancer, rapidly
deteriorated. An operation becoming necessary, the United States, for
humanitarian reasons accepted under the condition that the surgical intervention
would take place in New York. This action provoked the wrath of the Iranian
authorities. They requested the prompt extradition of the sovereign and enforced
they demand by taking hostage the personnel of the American embassy in Tehran.
Despite urgent medical needs, the Shah and the Shahbanou were forced to leave
New York for Texas, until a new country of asylum could be found.
That country was Panama, where again the Iranian government exerted considerable
pressure to obtain an extradition. The Shah was in dire need of a new surgical
operation, but after having accepted American surgeons to operate the Shah on
its territory, Panama recanted. The United States administration dispatched two
envoys to let the Shah know that should he wanted to be operated in the United
States, he would have to abdicate. At that time, President Sadat asked the Shah
to hurry and come to Egypt. The sovereigns departed for Cairo on March 23rd
1980. At an Azores Islands stopover, some U.S. officials held the plane under
the pretext of refueling. All the while, they were negotiating with the Islamic
government procedures to return the aircraft to Panama. At long last, the Shah
and the Shahbanou landed on Egyptian soil where President Sadat greeted them
with utmost warmth, friendship and fraternity. In Cairo, they were able to see
their children who had been studying in the United States and from whom they had
been separated.
The Shah passed away in Cairo's Maadi hospital on July 27, 1980. President Sadat
organized official if not national funerals. The Shah's coffin, covered with the
Iranian flag, was transported on a canon barrel with full military honors. In
conformity to the Constitution, the Empress assumed the charge of the regency
until the majority of her elder son. On October 31, 1980, the Crown Prince
reaching legal majority, (20 years) swore under the holy Quran, to assume the
responsibilities that the Iranian Constitution demanded from him, and thus by
right became, Reza Shah II of Iran.

It seems like yesterday but that yesterday was exactly five years ago. We went from 09.20.03 to 09.20.08 in a blink of an eye. And interestingly this time around it fell on a Saturday just like the original day. It was five years ago today in the heart of San Francisco when we celebrated on a grand scale the union of two big families. It was by far the happiest day of our lives and the timing could not have been any better. About ten weeks after the wedding celebration on a very cold early-December evening Dad was rushed to the ER due to a massive seizure which was diagnosed as terminal brain cancer. Had the wedding been planned just a few months later it would have taken on a much different mood. So indeed we have a lot to be thankful for on this fifth anniversary. I dedicate the following images to my nephew Mattin joon and also to ever-present Dad. The sofreh aghd is the master piece of the daughter-in-law of renowned Persian poet ostad Taraghi. On Sunday the 7th of September 2008 we gathered in the mid peninsula during the morning hours to send off our cousin Ranna joon to UC Santa Cruz. Cousin Sima joon invited everyone to her home for brunch and we all took turns dancing with a hat. As the hands of destiny would have it at the same time my sister, bro-in-law, and nephew were at a weekend getaway in sunny Santa Cruz and could not join us. Also countless noteworthy cousins were not able to join us but we had enough cousins present to send off Ranna with style. We will be visiting Santa Cruz regularly to make sure our cousin does not get herself in mischief and to also re-live our own carefree college years. This also marked the two year anniversary of Nicole joon joining our extended family. Nicole and I starred in a Bollywood music video after the family gathering and we had a blast taking pics.

With all due respect to
Federico Fellini, what was playing above the bar at
La Dolce Vita Wine Lounge
when we walked in was the final scene of "Casablanca." Owner
Sahar Gharai
occasionally screens Fellini's 1960
classic, but - given its racier material - usually later in the evening, once
the ratio of toddlers to spaghetti straps has shifted.
Movies are frequently front and center at this newish effort in Petaluma's
theater district. The Boulevard Cinemas across the street make it a useful
choice for a pre-film drink. Gharai, a Petaluma native who learned about wine in
Florence, opened Dolce Vita in September, and the enoteca concept dominates,
with a rack of wine bottles for retail sale dominating one long wall. If you're
not in a rush to see a movie, don't hesitate to ask for a
backgammon board, settle in with your preferred bottle
and, as per Claude Rains, round up the usual suspects.
The vibe:
Stylishly suburban, with an airy, high-ceiling look that
transports it beyond its home in the Theatre Square mall. Other projections
behind the bar include Pink Panther films and Blake Edwards' "The Party," adding
a go-go '60s tinge.
The crowd: In true
wine-bar fashion, it's ground zero for posses of
twentysomething women - are you listening, boys? -
including the ones who were handing out cupcakes when we stopped in. But it's
more mellow and inclusive than boisterous.
Best seat:
The high dark wood tables in front of the wall-mounted wine rack are perfect for
a foursome. Or, if you're a Peter Sellers fan, settle in at the bar.
Killer apps: Gharai's
mother, Sarideh, runs the kitchen. Despite the
Persian
cookbook on the counter, Italy
is in play. Try the mushroom crostini ($9), a generous arugula salad ($9) or a
well-edited cheese selection (three for $10).
The list: Five
three-taste flights ($13-$17) are on offer, part of 37 wines by the glass. A
quirky mix of California wines is the high point, especially the inclusion of
several local Petaluma Gap wines, such as the 2005 Ridgeway Two Pisces Vineyard
Pinot Noir ($7/taste; $14/glass). Stick with those over a less-inspired
selection of imports. If you have the option to get a bottle, the picks on the
wall include an impressive set of names for local Pinot and Syrah, including
Pinot from Hirsch Vineyards and Radio-Coteau and Syrah from Chasseur's Cazar
label. Retail prices are a touch high, but the markup to drink a bottle there is
just $10.
Also on tap: Several
beers by the bottle, plus four Champagne cocktails ($8 each) and bottled Sake2Me
sake-based drinks ($6 each).
Bonus: Happy hour, 5-7
p.m., comes Tuesdays and Thursdays. Plus, on Thursdays, local wineries pour
their bottlings.
Vitals: 151 Petaluma
Blvd. S., suite 117, Petaluma. (707) 763-6363. Noon-10 p.m. Tues.-Thurs., until
midnight Fri.-Sat., until 9 p.m. Sun.

Dad's youngest sister ameh Taleh joon with each of her scholarly sons at the posh summer 2008 Tehran wedding of the son of one of dad's dokhtar khalehs. Taleh joon came to Los Altos on March 12th 2005 and spent every waking minute next to dad's death bed sining Hayedeh and reading Hafez poetry to dad. She went back to Tehran on April 1st after three sleepless weeks. Dad departed 18 days later on the 19th. Thank you ameh Taleh for your help. May your shadow never be lowered from atop Erfan and Eiman. May Erfan and Eiman never forget the lessons dayi Mehdi taught them. May Erfan and Eiman continue to shoot pictures like the ones directly above. May pesar amehs Erfan and Eiman do nothing except take pictures. May a camera always be in the hands of either Erfan or Eiman. May Erfan and Eiman continue to send their American cousins pics from the motherland.

July 10th
On July 10th 1925 Meher Baba began observing silence. He remained 100% completely silent for the remaining 44 years of his life. Initially Baba dictated his discourses and messages through an alphabet board, but eventually he developed a unique set of hand gestures that the mandali translated for Baba. A few years back dad was telling me that when people are very mad they loudly yell at each other ... when people are a little mad they yell but not as loudly ... when there is love people whisper ... but when love is infinite and endless there is no longer a need for words. Dad always remained completely silent every July 10th for the entire day. If July 10th fell on a weekday he would even go to university and lecture physics without saying a single word. If we wanted to ask dad a question on a July 10th we'd have to make sure it was a yes or no question. Now that I reflect back to the sad days dad was motionless on his hospice bed I wonder if dad chose not to speak or whether it was the ruthless brain cancer which silenced dad. On this July 10th I'd like to wish the millions of Baba lovers a very happy silence day. I know for a fact that the majority of you are observing complete silence on this very spiritual and uplifting day.

if memory serves me correct dad's dear brother-in-law had come back from Iran and my parents threw a casual party
i also vaguely remember dad buying a big case of baghali and he was is the yard getting the baghali ready for baghali polo
i was living at berkeley at the time and drove down for this pow wow in my gray vw fox which had a bunch of cal stickers on it
right before leaving cal i ran into one of the berkeley bacheha on telegraph and he said hatman drive carefully
that person would be Dr. Pouradib who always gave sound advice to berkeley hamvatans
and i bought this shirt at the gap on telegraph which was right next to my apartment

This New Life is endless, and even after my physical death it will be kept alive by those who live the life of complete renunciation of falsehood, lies, hatred, anger, greed and lust; and who, to accomplish all this, do no lustful actions, do no harm to anyone, do no backbiting, do not seek material possessions or power, who accept no homage, neither covet honor nor shun disgrace, and fear no one and nothing; by those who rely wholly and solely on God, and who love God purely for the sake of loving; who believe in the lovers of God and in the reality of Manifestation, and yet do not expect any spiritual or material reward; who do not let go the hand of Truth, and who, without being upset by calamities, bravely and wholeheartedly face all hardships with one hundred percent cheerfulness, and give no importance to caste, creed and religious ceremonies. This New Life will live by itself eternally, even if there is no one to live it.

SPRING arrives
and a new Persian year begins

I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Faegheh Atashin the very best in the coming new year. May this year bring with it health and prosperity for ShahMahi and her entire extended family. During this new year it's my hope that our magical mermaid will be able to perform in her homeland after three arduous decades. It's also my hope that in the new year the derelict so-called fans of Googoosh who claim loveliness will once and for all put an end to all their immature shenanigans so that Googoosh will have the peace of mind that she deserves. During the festive and fun Norooz celebrations our thoughts are with the grieving Mehrabi family who are experiencing their first Norooz in the absence of their scholarly son Kasra jan. May sorrow and sadness never find its way in ShahMahi's life. In the new year may we all be here to witness ShahMahi's grand concerts in Tehran like the good old days.

Cyrus Firooz Ghaffari
first grandson of amoo jan Firooz
The extended Ghaffari clan warmly welcomes amoo Firooz's first grandson Cyrus Firooz Ghaffari born on March 15th 2008 at 7:37 pm Los Altos time. As the hands of destiny would have it, at the exact timing of the birth, Googoosh & Mehrdad were having a grand-scale concert in Texas. Texas oh wonderful Texas -- amoo Firooz received his doctorate degree from Texas A&M University and Texas is where the foundation of the Ghaffari family was first poured outside of the motherland. In fact, exactly four decades ago dad was in Texas with his bro Firooz. Furthermore, this birth is only four days before amoo Firooz's birthday. And if little Cyrus had waited four more hours his birthday would have been the same as my mom's birthday who happens to live four blocks from Cyrus who happens to be one of four. Moreover, Mehrdad's wife literally also just gave birth to a baby boy Mahan. Interesting series of events and happenings indeed if I should say so myself. The hands of destiny have once again directed the extended Ghaffari family towards happiness after a series of unfortunate events. Cyrus Firooz Ghaffari welcome to Los Altos where you have four generations of extended family. Let it be known to the relatives in Tehran that the correct pronunciation of this little Persian bundle of history is Cyrus as in Cyrus the Great and not Siroos as in amoo jan Siroos jan who is the family's current patriarch and may he be our patriarch for another forty years and may his shadow never be lowered from atop his four sons. And as the story has been passed down via the family, amoo Firooz got his name because he was born during the festive Norooz period which has with it happy Haji Firooz -- the Persian version of Santa Claus. It's with great happiness that hajifirooz.mp3 is currently running in background.

Message on the
Assassination of Mrs. Benazir Bhutto
Thursday, December 27th, 2007
I was extremely saddened to learn of the brutal assassination of Mrs.
Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the leader of
country’s “People’s Party”.
Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life in defending democracy and secularism
while standing firmly against religious extremism in her country. Her
commitment to democratic principles and values as well as her bravery are
both unforgettable and worthy of immense praise.
It is my wish to offer my heartfelt condolences for this enormous loss to
all defenders of democracy and secularism in the Islamic world, the
honorable people of Pakistan and specially to Mrs. Bhutto’s mother and
husband, Begum Nosrat Bhutto and Mr. Asif Ali Zardary.

Deepest Condolences upon Mrs. Benazir Bhutto's Untimely
Demise
Message of Condolences from H.I.M. Empress Farah Pahlavi
upon the brutal assassination of Mrs. Benazir Bhutto
December 27, 2007
The sad and sorrowful demise of Mrs. Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime
Minister of Pakistan who with great courage and unselfishness
served the people of her native land and gave her life is an immense loss
for all women of the world and more so
for all forward-looking Moslem women.
I knew the Bhutto family from way back, - Benazir Bhutto toiled with high
valiance and praiseworthy courage for the betterment and advancement
of her people, while mindful of the great dangers menacing her. She lost her
life heroically at the hands of cowardly murderers.
I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to her family and especially to
her mother, husband and bereaved children as well as the People of Pakistan.
I extend also my condolences to all women and men toiling for justice and
freedom wherever they are.

Mehdi Ghaffari & Mehdi Shadmehr
Tehran - summer of 1995
Both Mehdi's passed away within a very short period of one another. The above image was sent to me by pesar amehs Erfan & Eiman with the story that went as follows: at the precise time of this photo both Mehdi's were speaking of how to love God and how to become one with God and how to reach God. And as the hands of destiny would have it ten years later both of them reached God at about the same time. May their memory always be with us. I personally find it quite upsetting that one by one we are losing the intellects in the extended family.

Dr. Mehdi Aliabadi
12-14-07
It is with sadness that I report to Bay Area family and friends the departure of Dr. Mehdi Aliabadi. He leaves behind his loving wife dear Soudabeh and his three children Dr. Faranak Aliabadi, Dr. Thais Aliabadi, and engineer Amirali Aliabadi. Dr. Mehdi Aliabadi's three children together with my siblings, my cousins, and I, share the Los Altos High School and U.C. Berkeley tradition and our extended families go back two decades. I would like to extend my condolences to the entire Aliabadi family. Dr. Mehdi Aliabadi will be remembered on Sunday December 23rd in the upper peninsula. You may contact either myself or my brother Nader for further information. We would be happy to forward to you the memorial information so that we take some stress away from the Aliabadi family during this tough period. Another great intellect is no longer with us. May his spirit always be happy.

my intimate pictorial memoir of bygone days and yesteryears
images from years vanished yet not forgotten
from North Carolina to Tehran to British Columbia to the years in the Bay Area
included will also be a sampling of historic images from many years and many decades prior to my birth that eventually led to my birth
the collection will kick off on 10.10.10 with one historic photograph from a bygone era
thereafter, one distinct photograph will be added to the collection on the tenth of each and every month
the photographs will not be in chronological order and will randomly span across time and space
yours truly will be in most of the photographs which will cover three decades of life on this green earth
the addition of one photograph every tenth of every month will continue until my end
may this gallery underscore the great importance of photography in your own personal life
coming up in the future, the importance of keeping a chronicle record of personal events, experiences, and observations
with my thoughts on destiny (sarnevesht & ghesmat) and how everything from the past comes into the present to connect the dots
and how the exact timing of each and all past events on the life timeline determine all of your events today
and how an event long ago --no matter how small or insignificant at the time-- will powerfully impact your world of today
the hands of God are always at work and events from years ago are shaping your current experiences
stay tuned for my in-depth annotation of the life timeline and destiny

my musically-inclined nephew Mattin jan
summer of 07
Los Altos, California
nephew Mattin had a ball with both of his dayis on this summer day of 07
he would sprint back and forth from one dayi to the other dayi with great speed and would YELL daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayi
he did this continuously for over five minutes
nephew Mattin when you start to drive please don't use your cell phone in the car
(even hands-free is dangerous)
the above picture was shot with my Nikon CoolPix 5600 but I'm going to have to retire it pretty soon because it's too damn slow
(ameh Taleh brought the above rug with her from Iran during March of 05)

these were indeed the carefree days of my younger years
I've started to miss the days when dad and amoo Mohsen would sit around and talk nothing but nonsense for a few hours!
It was dad's encouragement that led my uncle to move from Woodland Hills to the Bay Area.

photo shot by Dr. Ali Kakavand the husband of dokhtar ameh jan Shiva jan
he took only one picture of us and the picture turned out perfect
may cousin jan Parmis jan continue the UC Berkeley tradition

came across this photo in cousin Shoaleh's kitchen
in memory of our dads...may their happy spirits always be with us

the place of her amoo jan Mehdi and amoo jan Firooz is empty
during the gathering I noticed that amoo jan Mohsen jan and cousin jan Shoaleh jan were both sporting the latest digital cameras
congrats to both of them
the place of nephew jan Mattin jan was empty as my sister and her husband could not make it
side note: two of my hubcaps were recently stolen so I took the other two off
I bought four new matching hubcaps and put them all on and then said forget it I don't even need hubcaps
